Drafted then drop in same offseason?

What is the future penalty if you drafted then dropped someone prior to the cutoff date in the same offseason?
Do you have to declare that you only wanted to sign them for 1 season prior to dropping the player, that way not getting the 5 year cap penalty the following season? Seeing as how it's assumed that drafted players get a 5 year deal unless stated otherwise... I was just kinda curious.

My understanding is that you can change a rookies contract at any time up to the cut down date in August. Thus technically you could request to have a rookie changed to a 1 and then drop him with no future cap penalty.

Thanks Scott
If this comes up for me, I'll just remember to request the 1 year deal on a drafted rookie if I end up deciding to drop them before our August cut off date.

You'll want Brandon to confirm though, I'm sure he'll see this thread in a couple days. But it sounds viable per the rules technically.

That is correct. Rookie contracts years aren't official until the cutoff date. You don't have to do anything though, if you keep them we'll assume you want 5 years and if you drop them prior to the deadline we'll assume you want 1 year.
If you want anything else then you can post in the contract forum by the 3rd sunday in august.
