If a tagged player gets dropped, what happens?

Curious what the outcome of this would be if in the current scenario where Vit will be over the allotted cap amount if he retains his current team as is, and then decides that he would rather drop Calvin Johnson and use the money elsewhere

Does a player that gets tagged and then dropped count as a 50% hit the upcoming season because they're being signed to the following season by placing a tag on them? Or would it count as a 15% hit next season because they're contract would become a 2 year deal in the current season and then that player is dropped before the start of the next season.

My understanding is that if Vit drops Megatron before the new season rolls over in four days, he gets a 50% hit for a couple days and then no cap penalty in 2014.

The NFL is actually more generous than we are. Teams can rescind a Franchise tag all the way into July (assuming there hasn't been a contract offer from another team), in which case the player goes on the open market. That could be an interesting rule change in our league if anyone else is interested. Btw, it's really funny how familiar I've become with the NFL CBA after joining this league. Lol!

Yeah, he can tag anyone on his team but he can't "sign" Calvin unless he drops someone and he has until the 15th to get under the cap with Calvin's contract. In our league all players sign their franchise tender on the 15th. No holdouts here!

If he doesn't drop anyone prior to the 15th then he can't sign Calvin and he will be dropped since his contract would have expired.
