So if I bid on a tagged player and get the player, which first rounder do I give up? The rules state "The compensatory draft picks must be the original draft picks of the team that signed the tagged player."

Well, I have 3 first round picks but none of them are my original pick. Would it be the highest pick available assuming there is no original pick?

You would not be able to bid if you no longer own your original pick.

Why is that? With all the trading going around that just restricts who can bid on tagged players. In my keeper league where we give up draft picks equal to a players "keeper number" you give up your natural/original pick or if you don't have one the highest pick you have in the round and if you have no picks at all that round the you give up your pick a round higher.

Don't understand why we would want to lessen a key component to the league by not allowing teams to bid on tagged players, so long as they actually have the picks in question.

I know in the league that this rule originated in tagging is looked at as a way to keep a player on your roster after his contract runs out and not as just another way for players to move from one team to another, so by only allowing original picks to be used this gives the tagging team that much more of a chance of keeping their player.

In this scenerio would a team with the #4 pick be able to trade it along with Dwayne Bowe for Andre Johnson and the #12 pick and then turn around and bid on Larry Fitzgerald who was tagged and give up the #12 pick in exchange?

I wouldn't have a problem if in the future we voted to change the rule to something like original pick or better? But I agree with Bring the Pain's concerns on the example above.

I can see the concern, although in the example there is nothing stopping the team with the #16 pick from bidding on Fitz as well. No guarantee that the compensation pick will be a high one.

I just found it very ironic (and sad) that I've accumulated 3 first round picks in all my trades over the past 2 years but I am locked out of bidding on any tagged players simply because I don't have my "original" pick. Oh well, that's life.

Maybe you could work out a deal with the owner whom you currently own's the player you want. It could be possible the are fine with trading them, but current player value on contract is fair and truth is they just didn't want to let him go for free.

Very true.

You would have to work out the trade before Feb 15th since it says in our constitution:

No player maybe traded that has zero contract years.

That is another good one but the one I'm thinking of was in reference to a thread I started about trading guys that were tagged and coming up with an alternate trade instead of the standard draft pick compensation.

I vaguely remember that one. I'm pretty sure that the tagging dates were changed to accommodate some of that (i.e. players can be tagged right now and yet teams can still offer trades on those players until the 15th deadline). After the 15th then no trades on tagged players, only the bidding process and possible compensation as needed if you don't match the bids.
