Supplemental Draft

How do you guys think we should handle this?

I saw a post online from another commish who mentioned this and they hold a supplemental draft with the same rules as the NFL. Where you bid one of your future draft picks from next year on the player. Who ever bids the highest draft pick gets the player and I believe the tie breaker is the current years draft order. We would probably have to use that to slot his salary as well. If no one makes a bid then the players are Free Agents.

I don't think its a huge issue and obviously doesn't come up very often but if a player of Andrew Lucks caliber left, it would become an issue if we've already held our draft. That would be a huge talent that could circumvent our draft and not be made available to the worst team like normal. A more likely candidate could be a guy like Terrelle Pryor who is currently considering it and he is a guy that would potentially get drafted next year.

I thought we would just get out in front of this and come up with a game plan so its clear if it ever does come up.

So you're saying this is only if the NFL actually has a supplemental draft themselves and if so then we would have our own supplemental draft for those players only?

So then we would have a bidding on those players.

So I could bid a 3rd rounder on Pryor, you could bid a 2nd rounder and then B2M and Punishers both bid 1st rounders and between then whomever had the highest draft order (original before trades) would win Pryor in exchange for their 2012 first rounder.

Now, if that is all true as I understand it, what then would be Pryor's salary? The slot the draft pick was in this year?

Exactly, does that seem like a good way to handle it? It seems like that would match up with our rules very well and matches up with the NFL rules which is what we've always tried to do.

How do teams make those bids? If its a "secret" ballot that might be a little difficult since I wouldn't want to see everyone's bid so we'd have to have a way to do it that way. Or does the NFL do it more openly? And teams just either bid or pass when its their turn in the draft order? In that scenario we would just go down the draft order until someone says they want them for that draft pick, I think MFL would now support that way automatically since you can have more than one draft per season.

I don't want to over complicate it since it's so rare but I feel like we should have a way to handle it so it never becomes an issue. 2 less Excedrin migraine's I have to take in the future.

I doubt a talent like Luck would ever pass on the big bucks from the regular draft to enter the supplemental. Because of that and the complicatedness of how the NFL does it w/ the tiers of priority, I think it would be good enough to just throw em out there and bid on them like a FA. Whatever's clever though.

Based on that link I don't think we would want to go all that complicated in fantasy land.

You could either do a bidding type system on the message board, similar to what we do for tagged players. Start a thread for each supplemental player and teams can bid their draft pick(s) on them. Highest bid wins.

Or do a "regular" draft like the rookie draft where teams can pass.

I think it's a neat idea, but in the end I believe the FA auction can take care of all of it. If someone is drafted in the NFL via the supplemental, if there is enough potential there for fantasy then someone will bring him up for bid and the normal auction will take care of value. Teams just need to pay attention, but then that is always the case in the off season.

Yeah I was under the impression the NFL's system was a lot more straightforward. Given that it is so rare, I think its easiest and just as fair to let our FA process handle it. For now, I think I'll just clarify it in the constitution so we're covered and if someone really wants to use another system we can put it up for a vote.

I agree above. I think the current FA Auction system is the least complicated way to handle the Supplemental players. I can't even think of the name of a Supplemental player in the past that amounted to anything worth talking about. But I could be wrong..
