Just throwing this out there cause its something being talked about in a league I run also. The idea is when you have multiple years on the players contract and there's gonna be a penalty in the following year, if you have the money in the current year available you can opt to buy out the next years penalty. Example.. I drop Joe Montana with a 1mil salary and a 5yr contract and the owner chooses to pay the next years salary cap penalty in the same year the hit would actually be 145% so in order to drop Joe I would have to have $450,000 of cap space prior to making the drop. This idea seems to be popular among my league owners and will prolly go into the rule book for 2010. Coarse it has to be put to official vote first.
Hope I didn't confuse anyone with my babble....lol

Re: Salary Cap Penalty Idea
At least for our league I think that would be a fairly significant change especially since we already allow teams to drop players after the NFL season and that cap hit effects the previous season as long as hit happens before Feb 15th.

not suggesting we do that here as I would never come into a league and request change right off the bat for any reason. Its just a interesting concept thats being thrown around in my league and I was wondering if anyone here had an opinion pro or con on the idea...

I'm not one of those guys that gets offended by ideas being brought up so bring up any idea anytime.Georgia Punishers wrote:not suggesting we do that here as I would never come into a league and request change right off the bat for any reason.

I love it as an "idea", and I love talking rule changes. This one would require some changes to work in our system is what I was getting at. As a whole we've gravitated towards ideas that bring the structure closer to how the NFL is (was) this one reminds me of the NBA, that's myGeorgia Punishers wrote:Its just a interesting concept thats being thrown around in my league and I was wondering if anyone here had an opinion pro or con on the idea...

It's an interesting concept to be sure. Not sure I'd want it in this league or not. It would take a lot of changes since I could just buy out all future cap hits at the end of the season when dropping players. Not sure I like that. Once concept I like about this league is that there are consequences for your actions into the future.
But for the idea as a whole off the top of my head I think there needs to be a greater penalty to buy out that cap hit. Like double.
So if dropping Jerry Rice would be a 1 million cap hit this year and a 500K hit next year then to buy out that 500K for next year it would cost you 1 million (double) in this season.

Hmm, good point... I like that idea or even more of a penalty. I'll have to toss that idea in the discussion. Thanks for the point of view...
