Off-season roster limit

Post by bonscott » Sat May 26, 2012 6:08 pm

Out of the vote for elimination of the roster cap (which passed) was the idea of have some sort of off-season roster limit.

So why not discuss this now and see if it's an idea worth persuing for there is a problem.

Right now the roster limit in-season is 22 plus 3 taxi squad. Off-season is unlimited plus 3 TS.

So what would be a fair limit off-season to allow teams that want to get a few prospects (which they of course must cut in August) vs. hording.

25?
27?
30?

Most teams right now appear to be 25 or under with a couple over that.

I think we are fine as is. But if no contract years cap caused a problem that I'm missing, then a roster limit during the offseason would be something that I think we should consider.

Right now I'm hoping most of the league wants to roster 40 guys. :2cents:

Usually, when the commissioner has a good team, these are the kind of polls you see...

Why would anyone want this?

Didn't we just vote last year to lift the offseason restriction?

What could have possibly changed from then till now?

This is a discussion in response to the concerns posted in the vote thread for removing the contract cap. I'm not personally saying I have an issue but figured if there is one for many in the league now is the time to discuss it and get it out there.

Right now I fall on the side that I don't have an issue with an unlimited roster limit and if someone signs up 20 free agents they are going to take one heck of a cap hit. More power to 'em I say.

Yeah I think we should keep it unlimited as well. If guys want to load up during the off-season and take on the cap hits later on in exchange for it so be it.

A cap hit is well worth the price of potentially rostering the next Victor Cruz IMO... Hopefully the new unlimited cap amount doesn't get abused. I voted for it, but I kinda regret it to be honest

Cap hits are totally worth getting the next Victor Cruz but you've only got till August 19th (2012 cutdown date) to find the next Victor Cruz. Keep in mind Cruz didn't actually breakout till week 3. August 19th is normally the 2nd preseason game so that is all the time you get to make your final cuts.

This thread proves to me that unlimited should work fine. There are pros and cons to the approach of loading up the roster in the off season. It allows each owner to determine how to operate his franchise. The more freedom to operate the better.

Also I think salaries of undrafted rookies and vets who have a news flash in the offseason will go up as more teams could put in a bid with no contract cap. This will then have the effect of even more cap hits as many of those guys burn out and get cut.

Couldn't agree more with the last three posts. At the end of the day if you're looking for that next "Cruz" chances are you are going to miss more than you hit and you aren't going to find him now. And when you miss, all it does is benefit the other 15 owners. For example, I've been keeping a close eye on Dwight Jones of the Texans because I felt if he could put it together he could be solid. With a no contract year cap I definitely would have rolled the dice by now given there is no roster limit. Well, we all know how that would have panned out for me given he just quit - 1 loser amd 15 winners. This creates more risk, more strategy and each and every move becomes a little more meaningful to your long term outlook. I love the unlimited roster size in the offseason along with the removal of the contract cap. It makes the league that much more exciting moving into next year.

Cruz and Foster are the two that come to mind the most in the past 2 years. No idea what their history is within the league, but diamonds are definitely out there ;)
