Jahvid Best - NFL Career Over

Post by Wascawy Wabbits » Fri Jan 25, 2013 1:23 pm

Just read these

How does it work with our salary cap? Does he need to officially retire for him to not count against the cap the following season after he gets dropped?

Just took a look at the constitution
Retired Players may be waived at a 50% salary cap penalty in the current season and no future cap penalty.
If a player does not file for retirement he does not qualify as a retired player.
If a player retires from the league after you waive him and no other franchise in the league ever rosters the player then you can apply to waive the future cap hit penalty.
If a player dies he will be treated as a retired player from the date of his passing.
How does it work if I drop him before the Feb 15 cutoff date, and he retires after that date? Does the cap penalty still count? Or does it get removed?

based on this line: "If a player retires from the league after you waive him and no other franchise in the league ever rosters the player then you can apply to waive the future cap hit penalty."

it looks like the penalty will be removed, but you'll have to ask/apply... as long as noone adds him.

That's a good question, bonesman is right but we don't really have a clear timeline for the "as long as no other franchise in the league rosters the player" I think if we added "by the start of the following NFL season" it would clear that up.

Ya... Just kinda curious as to how that'd all work since I'm sure something like that doesn't exactly come up all too often.

His resulting cap penalty will be $192,500 for the 2013 season. Not a whole lot, but every penny counts ;)

In all these years I don't think it's ever come up. I agree with the modification of "before the start of the next season". So if you drop Best now so long as nobody adds him by the first NFL game then the cap hit for 2013 would be waived. Makes sense and I don't think it really needs a vote or anything.

So, let's say his resulting cap penalty would be $1,925,000 for the 2013 season and Wabbits cuts him. I then pick him up for league minimum. Does this mean no matter what happens to his retirement status Wabbits will be stuck with the $1,925,000 hit?

Luckily the cap hit will be under $200k instead of $2m next season, but I'd assume that's what could happen..

Evil plan that'd be to ensure I'd have less money for FA :stirpot:

Yeah that's what could happen if the cap hit was that much.

I would think if the cap hit was that high though, it would be for a decent player that might actually be worth picking up. More like the old Brett Farvre situations. Here is an old article I dug up on his situation http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6030210
