Devil Dogs and Sabertooths

Post by braven112 » Sat May 11, 2013 5:07 pm

You can post the player you want to draft here. If they are currently up for auction you can still pick them. You'll be awarded the player and the auction will be closed. If they have been won by another team in auction before you pick then you can't pick them. Anyone you choose will be treated as a draft pick and you'll still have till August to choose a contract like you would normally.

I don't agree, at this point the draft is over and I'd say if they want a guy they need to go thru the auction. I don't want to be a hardass but it's a big slippery slope to allow someone who timed out to pick a player 2 weeks after the draft is over. If they had contacted the commish or posted before the end of the draft then sure, put in the replacement. But the draft is *over*, be done with it. Don't agree at all.

Sabertooths by rule has to make a selection anyway. 3rd round picks are optional so Devil Dogs doesn't have to. I kind of see what you are saying but I don't think teams are going to intentionally miss their picks so they can have all year to pick. It probably would be a good idea to have a cut off date, but this isn't a common thing and I don't think it will be. If you are missing your picks constantly you won't be asked back to the league.

We'll put a deadline of 1 week after the last pick. Sabertooths will take a cap hit of 425k. The equivalent of drafting the 2 players in the second round and dropping them, if the picks are not in by Sat May 18 1:30:35 p.m. PT 2013.

If Devil Dogs doesn't pick by then then his pick will be treated as a pass.

I think I'd have to agree with Scott here.

If at any point during the draft they were to have chosen someone, then filling that person into that slot is no big deal... But we're a full 24 hours passed the draft conclusion. Saber's been offline since Weds, and DD logged in on Friday while he was on the clock to make his pick but didn't end up doing anything. If I was Poker or Vit and had those players brought up after the draft concluded only for them to be taken away, I dunno....

If anything, I'd say sub in 2 players for Saber today since we're supposed to be obligated to draft a player in the first and second round. Whether those 2 players are who's remaining based on ADP that haven't been brought up for auction or just 2 random dudes that he can exchange within the next week, doesn't really matter to me... But I think Saber's roster should probably have to carry those 2 rookies, while DD isn't obligated to since we can choose to skip our 3rd round selection and basically missed the boat (sorry dude).

Works for me.
I had my post sitting in edit mode since early this morning and didn't respond until now, but I think this is a good solution.

I think we need to address this one. I think by not picking while on the clock he DID pass. ESPECIALLY when he visited the site while on the clock, as WW noted, and didn't pick or trade or anything (and I know for a fact he had an offer for the pick)

Sabertooths getting a WEEK also doesn't sit that well with me. He's gotta make a pick sure, but he shouldn't be able to snag anyone who's already been brought up for auction (say someone gets bid up to over a mill for instance, he can swoop in and grab him at the min? kinda BS)

Now if their absence is due to some family or medical emergency or something, I'll certainly be a whole lot more sympathetic.

We should def take this opportunity to amend the constitution with some more clear cut rules incase this ever happens again.

Agreed. I'm fine with how commish handled, although I probably wouldn't have been that nice. You miss your pick, treat it like the NFL, you can make a pick as soon as you have one. Once auction is over, I say you can fill it with anyone who is not currently up for auction. Being able to claim someone from an auction, I don't like that, but it is a commish call since outside of the constitution.

I agree, I'm assuming that there was/is some sort of emergency. I know that Sabertooths has gone through a lot this past year and was moving when we started the draft but then went awol so I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Last I knew Devil Dogs was in the military and I know he has had to leave unexpectedly before. Plus he's has a newborn, I feel very comfortable giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Missing 2 second round picks though is a pretty huge penalty already and if he comes in and takes a 4th round rookie its not the end of world from my perspective. Especially if its an emergency or a rare thing. But if its not an emergency and your not checking into the site, etc. I'd rather just replace the owner vs. hurting the franchise for the person who's going to take it over.

I'd love to hear any ideas on how we should handle it going forward. The NFL would never run into this issue since there's is a live draft. So for us we need a deadline that accounts for a legit emergency but I'd also be comfortable with a missed pick coupled with a certain time frame of no contact where you are replaced as an owner. Being present for the auction and draft are a pretty huge aspect for this league.

At this point I just hope those guys are okay.

As for the future, I would say we we give a 48 hr time frame after the draft ends for owners who missed picks in round 1 or 2 to make up picks and if the clock runs out on you in the 3rd that's a pass. Otherwise take the cap hit?

If it turns out the guy was in a coma or something crazy legit we can just let him have his guys.

I know pickins are slim, but there are UDFAs every year that make significant impacts (Morris, Gordon, Ridley, Ivory)

I would agree. In the future if a team missed a 1st or 2nd rounder then they have 48 hours from the end of the draft to pick up an undrafted rookie. A missed 3rd rounder is a pass, you're out of luck.

If the team doesn't pick up a rookie then they take a cap hit. And what would that cap hit be? A drop of a 5 year contract at the min bid for that pick? So if it's $425K then they get a 50% hit this year plus a hit for next season based on the 5 year formula? Sounds crazy but what if the missed pick is a 1st rounder which has tiered salary? I'd say you'd have to take the highest one to be fair.

What about the other owners that might want to bring up a rookie in the auction? I'd suggest if this happens again that owners take a risk doing so as the team that missed a pick could scoop up the player so perhaps wait the 48 hours out before starting an auction, but that's up to those teams.

I don't think we can force them to have put a 5 year contract on their skipped pick. It would be an added deterrent though. And I'd be amazed if this ever happened in the first round, but if so, I have no prob with the ghost compensatory pick being assigned as RB.

Agreed on the last paragraph. I was surprised people still brought guys up knowing they could be sniped.

I agree with LB though in terms of the contract length. You lost out on a chance to have a star on your team for the next 5 years (for cheap), and you take an immediate cap hit. It hurts now and in the future. I love everything else, anything else we are missing before we put it up for vote?

Bumping this...
Don't remember if we took a vote on a future rule change or not, or if Saber's was given his cap penalty for not making selections in the 2nd round.

Wow, just seeing this. Pretty sure I posted it in this message board, but draft time in this league was a tough time for me this year. Was in the hospital with my wife and newborn daughter for a week, and drafting sparingly from my phone. Thought I had posted that I intended to pass with my pick, but guess I didn't.

Not sure how this post went unnoticed until now though. Sorry guys!

I don't think we did either. I'll fix Sabertooth right now though and try to get a poll for this and one other rule change up in the next week around cutdown time.
