4-year contracts for 2nd- and 3rd-round draft picks.

Post by bocious » Thu Mar 26, 2015 2:24 pm

This was brought up in a different thread, but it's a separate idea so I'm posting it here.

The NFL only gives 5-year contracts to 1st-round picks, and 4-year contracts to everyone else. Given the crappy free agency period we just went through, this seems like a good time to consider whether we want to try this in our league. If we vote for this, the change wouldn't take effect until the 2017 draft class.

Fire away.

I actually posted something similar last year, which then became a completely different beast - http://www.theleague.us/forum/viewtopic ... 1380#p4070

It's one year. This seems a little knee jerk to me. Look at all the players with one year left going into this season. Have to imagine next year will be a bull market.

So do I, main reason I saved my cap room this season and started my rebuild now. :dukes:

Personally I could go either way. I like keeping my players long term, and I also like the free agency period. I think I like the idea overall, but I can see why people aren't keen on it.

I don't see the need for a change here. Basically 2nd and 3rd rounders are shots in the dark, most flame out and bust so why take away a year for those that draft well and get a hit on a late round guy?

If the reason is to put more guys in free agency earlier I don't see the need. This year sucked. But then again it was our first year under new tagging rules, more players then ever were tagged which is what we wanted. Side effect is less "studs" and difference makers go back to the draft. In fact that is why I bid on Dez because I figured that was the best way to acquire someone and not worry about getting outbid in the auction and be left hanging. Most of the tagged players this year will probably end up in the draft next year, and guys next year that get tagged and kept will then probably be released the following year because it's too expensive. So I see this as a combo of just a bad year overall for free agents plus a 1 year "pause" due to tagging changes.

In the end I would be against changing the contracts for rookies and would vote no, but if the majority go that way it's certainly not a deal breaker for me either way.
