Re: Drop a player to rebid on him right away
Just to weigh in here, I don't have much of a problem with this. Seems like it is well within the rules. I think it was a longshot that it would turn out the way the owner intended, but hey, knock yourself out... At least it gave league members a chance to discuss the situation which I think is usually a good thing when it comes to matters that are a little outside of the norm of standard operating procedure.
But Scott's take on how this kind of thing could be a negative to league stability is well taken. If numerous guys were constantly working some angle or "loophole" in the rules, it would get old. As the new guy here, I am cognizant of not being that guy. It's not the impression I want to give and it is really just not how I roll. I haven't been here long enough, obviously, to decide if it is something that happens a lot.
Though, in this particular instance -- no harm no foul, I say.

Re: Drop a player to rebid on him right away
Most, not all, but most teams played the year with 3-5 million in cap space so that makes it nearly impossible for most players to go for "cheap", with 16 teams there are just to many oppurtunites for teams to place bids at market value, there's no doubt this is a cheesy move but I think 95% of the time the way the rules are set up (50% cap hit for one) it will backfire on you if you try to pull it off this is a perfect example of why you enjoy the player under 500,000 while you can, Welker wouldn't have cost this much if he would have been a free agent right when free agency opened.Achon44 wrote:I personaly don't ever see someone going that "cheap". Maybe a little below market value, but not a steal. I feel there will always be at least a few teams with cap room hoping that a Ryan Grant type situation presents itself.bonscott wrote:RE: As for the "loophole".
My point, probably poorly made, was that say this was August. Everyone's roster is full up. Very few teams have any cap space available and with good reason. Welker gets dropped and bid on right away and goes for only 1.5 million cause nobody has more cap then that. Thus a top 10/15 guy goes cheap for 5 years simply because someone waited until everyone had less cap space then him and didn't have enough to bid high *instead* of the market really determining his value. It's just total cheese and there is no way to say otherwise.
Sometimes I get the rules confused playing and commishing in so many leagues but I don't think we have our rules set up to prevent a team from dropping someone 10 minutes prior to the waiver deadline. This is something we should address.

Not sure if I mentioned it in this thread or another but every league I'm in has a simple rule that prevents this from ever happening: If a player is dropped they cannot be picked up/bid on until the following fantasy week. This allows for all teams to have a fair shot at a player. So if a player is dropped 10 minutes prior to the deadline he can't be bid on until the next week so then there would be no problem.braven112 wrote: Sometimes I get the rules confused playing and commishing in so many leagues but I don't think we have our rules set up to prevent a team from dropping someone 10 minutes prior to the waiver deadline. Same here, we'll have to make sure that is a part of our rule book going forward.bonscott wrote:Not sure if I mentioned it in this thread or another but every league I'm in has a simple rule that prevents this from ever happening: If a player is dropped they cannot be picked up/bid on until the following fantasy week. Re: Drop a player to rebid on him right away
I think Joe got my main point the best. There are many ways that we can all find "loopholes" or "work the system" to our advantage. Doing so almost always leads to problems, in my experience. Owners should try to avoid doing these things for the betterment of the league.
Heck, in my league my rules are 14 pages long in an attempt to close up as many of those loopholes as possible because I have a couple owners that just can't seen to help themselves and always want to work the system.
This incident is most definately trying to work the system. Nothing illegal about it for sure. But doing these things usually is bad for a league and can lead to teams leaving.
That's really what my point is. Not everyone may have experienced this before which is why I brought it up. No offense to anyone including the Boys.

Re: Drop a player to rebid on him right away
Since you commish other leagues you probably know this but if you don't the setting for that in MFL is in the Waivers/Free Agents setup. First option to lock players unil.... I'd suggest lock players until say Sunday 1pm EST. That way as the games begin we can start putting bids on free agents for the following week. Or locked until blind bidding can begin whenever that is. I checked the calendar and there is nothing on it about our bidding periods so not sure why those didn't transfer over to 2008 but anyway...braven112 wrote:Same here, we'll have to make sure that is a part of our rule book going forward.bonscott wrote:Not sure if I mentioned it in this thread or another but every league I'm in has a simple rule that prevents this from ever happening: If a player is dropped they cannot be picked up/bid on until the following fantasy week. Let me know how this works out. I'm going to do something similar with Norwood. He is worth much less than half of his contract at this point. Please let me know what the appropriate way to do this would be.
I'll announce the date ahead of time, place my proxy bid, and if some sucker outbids me, welcome to the "winner's curse".

See, what Boys was trying to do was this. He had Welker cheap but only 1 year. He was trying to get him for multiple years at less then he was worth by dropping and rebidding. It backfired this time because there were 2 other teams with a lot of cap space.Mistakes Were Made wrote:Let me know how this works out. I'm going to do something similar with Norwood. For Norwood, if you drop him you'll take an immediate big 50% cap hit and a cap hit in 2009 as well. So be aware of that.

Absolutely. Norwood is that bad. I think I own him around 6 mil. Lets say he's worth 800K. If I bid 1.2 mil and get him for 2-3 yeasrs, I'm way up. If someone out bids me, I get 3 mil in cap space back this season which is way, way more than Norwood is worth. In theory, lets say I bid him 3 mil and sign him long term. I'm no worse off for '08 and 3million (minus the 09 cap hit) better off for '09.bonscott wrote:See, what Boys was trying to do was this. He had Welker cheap but only 1 year. Go for it, if you think you'll make out ahead there is nothing stopping you and their shouldn't be, if you feel like taking the cap his is worth it why not? Just drop him and put a bid on what you think he should be worth, the market will determine what his true value is. And you'll have a nice salary cap hit to enjoy.Mistakes Were Made wrote:Absolutely. Norwood has been dropped and you can all bid away. Good luck.
