Before we vote, I want to make sure we're all on the same page. Is this what we're agreeing to vote on?
Franchise Player - each owner may designate 1 player whose contract with the team has expired. A FP will be tendered a one year contract at the average of the top three salaries at his position or a 20% salary increase, whichever is greater. A FP may be offered a contract (salary and years) by any team. His original team has the right to match the highest offer. If the original team declines to match the offer, they will receive the 1st and 2nd round draft choice as compensation.

Transition Player - each owner may designate 1 player whose contract with the team has expired. A TP will be tendered a one year contract at the average of the top ten salaries at his position or a 20% salary increase, whichever is greater. A TP may be offered a contract (salary and years) by any team. His original team has the right to match the highest offer. If the original team declines to match the offer, they will not receive any compensation.

Restricted Free Agent - each owner may designate 1 player whose contract with the team has expired. There are two types of RFA tags a team can choose from:

RFA Option #1
A RFA will be tendered a one year contract at the average of the top twenty salaries at his position or a 20% salary increase, whichever is greater. A RFA may be offered a contract (salary and years) by any team. His original team has the right to match the highest offer. If the original team declines to match the offer, they will receive the 3rd round draft choice as compensation. If no team bids, the tagging owner can choose to extend the contract by 1-3 years.

RFA Option #2
A RFA will be tendered a one year contract at the average of the top twenty salaries at his position or a 20% salary increase, whichever is greater. A RFA may be offered a contract (salary and years) by any team. His original team has the right to match the highest offer. If the original team declines to match the offer, they will receive next years 2nd round draft choice as compensation.
I bolded the parts that we've been discussing recently.

Usually, when the commissioner has a good team, these are the kind of polls you see...

As mentioned in prior posts, I'd rather see the top 5 salaries remain for the Franchise tag, but if this is how we want to update the tagging rules I could live with the difference in that tag.

I am fine with it all and would vote in favor of the changes. I only wish there was a better (ie, nonnumerical) label than RFA1/2.

The only other verbiage that the NFL uses when it comes to tags, that I can think of, are exclusive and non-exclusive... but I'm not sure that would be an improvement.

I'm good either way with the top-3 vs top-5 thing. My opinion on that has settled on indifference, and I'll vote for either of them. I agree that the RFA names could be better, but I don't have a good suggestion.

Yea, for "atmosphere" we can try to come up with some names. I found this page with definitions the NFL uses: http://www.steelergridiron.com/informat ... tions.html

Maybe RFA1 we could call Exclusive RFA since the tagging team could give a 1-3 yr contract if no offer is made and RFA2 would just be the Restricted Free Agent.

The one nice thing about RFA1 and 2 is since we can only choose one of them it kinda makes sense to give them very similar names.

But in the end naming is something we can get ideas on later I'd guess.
